Sewing

Seek the help of a seamstress or home economics teacher when working on the requirements for this award.
1. On a piece of plain coloured fabric, make samples of the
following hand stitches:
(a) Running stitch (b) Hemming stitch
(c) Basting stitch (d) Cross stitch.
2. Embroider a design on one of the following:
(a) A pair of pillow cases (b) A duchess set of three pieces (c) A supper cloth
3. Do one of the following:
(a) Make a yard of tatted lace. (b) Crochet a doily or lace around a handkerchief. If a handkerchief, make at least two rows around.
(c) Knit a simple baby garment or if you are not able to do this a garment for yourself.
4. Collect samples of as many different kinds of material as you can find. These may be scraps of material around your home or remnants bought from a store. Fasten a sample
of each material in your notebook and identify the fabric. Give washing or cleaning instructions for each.
5. Put a hem in a skirt. This may be done in a new garment or in one that needs to be lengthened or shortened.
6. Join two pieces of material by means of correctly sewn hook and eye. Do the same for demonstrating the sewing on of snap fasteners. Using a double piece of fabric, sew on a
‘flat sew through’ button correctly. Place in your book. Write instructions for sewing on a shank button.
7. Using a sewing machine, demonstrate the following:
(a) Plain seam (b) French seam
(c) Flat seam. Practise until you have good samples to place in your book. Using two pieces of fabric, demonstrate the correct way to sew a zipper. You may use the shortest zipper available.
Place in your notebook.
8. Give three Scripture references in the making of clothes.
